Number of Syphilis Cases Doubles

The number of diagnosed syphilis cases doubled last year in the West Midlands but the growth in sexually transmitted diseases overall is slowing, according to a new report.
The total number of sexually transmitted diseases diagnosed in the region crept up from 24,534 in 2003 to 25,610 the following year.
The diseases included in the national report, by the Health Protection Agency, were gonorrhoea, chlamydia, herpes, syphilis and warts.
In the Birmingham and the Black Country Strategic Health Authority region, syphilis cases rose from 74 to 156.
Across the West Midlands it increased from 98 to 206. Chlamydia remained the most commonly diagnosed STI in the region, with 7,668.
Nationally, there was a two per cent increase in STIs in England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland, from 735,302 in 2003 to 751,282 last year. Across the UK as a whole, the number of people diagnosed with chlamydia rose from 95,879 in 2003 to 103,932 last year
