Bikes Plus Competes in 24-Hour Race

Posted on: Friday, 1 July 2005, 12:00 CDT

During the weekend of June 11, a four-person team from Bikes Plus participated in a 24-hour Adventure Race at Cherokee National Forest.

Adventure racing entails mountain biking, running, canoeing and trekking, all accomplished as a team.

Made up of Cordova residents, including Bill Fredrick as team captain and Keith Latiolais as team navigator, team members Karen Malgorski as team mule/paddling navigator and Sheri Gaines added to our support.

The Bikes Plus team spent 24 hours travelling nearly 80 miles. This was all while trying to find points throughout the forest with only the aid of a map, a compass and coordinates provided by the race director.

The race started at 7 a.m. on Saturday and continued throughout the day and night, ending at 7 a.m. Sunday.

Adventure racing is a sport that requires all members to complete the events within specific time limits and do them as a team.

It pushes a person beyond any possible training regimen and tests the ability of team members to function as a team throughout the pain, insects, poison ivy and lack of sleep and food .

Would we do another one? At 3 a.m. on that Sunday morning, probably not. But today, we signed up for our next race at the end of August.

William A. Fredrick is a Cordova resident and team captain of Team Bikes Plus.
