Experts advise avoiding dangerous toys
Experts at a U.S. non-profit group say it is more important than ever to take precautions when buying toys for children.
Officials at Prevent Blindness America caution consumers to not only be alert for high lead content and choking hazards — any toy with a part that fits through a toilet roll tube is inappropriate for a child under age 3 — but to inspect toys for sturdiness, impact resistance and sharp edges.
Toys that shoot or include parts that fly off should be avoided completely, officials said.
It can be very tempting to buy the hottest toy or game, but it may not be the best choice for your child,
Hugh Parry of Prevent Blindness America said in a statement. It is much more important to make sure that the gifts we give are safe.
Parry suggests gift certificates to movie theaters, restaurants, or retail stores allows parents to supervise choices for holiday gifts.
When buying toys, Parry suggests remembering:
– To make sure each toy is appropriate to the child’s age and developmental level.
– To remain aware of product recalls and realize recalled or banned items may still be available online.
– To include protective gear when giving sports equipment For example, include eye goggles when giving a basketball.
