Integrated Benefits Institute Helps Employers Make the Business Case for Health and Productivity Improvement

Posted on: Monday, 8 December 2008, 08:30 CST

Fortune 500 employer estimates that saving one day in health-related lost productivity equals 56 cents per share

SAN FRANCISCO, Dec. 8 /PRNewswire/ -- In today's challenging economy every employer needs to maximize the value of its health expenditures for business success. To help companies make the business case for health investments, the Integrated Benefits Institute (IBI) has developed a DVD about the experience of a Fortune 500 company in securing executive-level support for health and productivity initiatives. The DVD demonstrates how to make the business case for understanding the full value of such investments and is relevant to employers of all sizes.

With the support of an IBI health and productivity modeling tool, the CFO, in partnership with the company's executive for wellness and health promotion, targeted a one-day improvement per employee, per year in estimated health-related lost time. The productivity impact of that one day on the company's bottom line would improve annual earnings by $15 million. This result is equal to the bottom-line impact of growing their "top-line" sales revenue by $61 million. The Wall Street value of saving one day of lost time equaled 56 cents per share.

The DVD is part of a continuing effort by IBI to provide employers and their supplier partners with resources for proving the business value of health. "This information is a great example of how employers can utilize tools such as IBI's Health & Productivity Snapshot to identify health-related productivity issues and communicate the value of health, solutions and strategies to the C-Suite," said Thomas Parry, PhD, president of IBI.

Single copies of the DVD, underwritten by Novartis, are available on request. The DVD may be ordered on IBI's website at http://ibiweb.org by clicking on "Free Business Case DVD" in the orange "What's New" box. Employers can quality for a free one-year IBI membership and can get additional information on IBI's website.
