Polio cases reach 66 in Indonesia

JAKARTA, July 2 (Xinhua) -- The number of children infected with polio in Indonesia reached 66 in the country's first outbreak in a decade after a new case of the crippling disease was detected in Lampung Province, Sumatra Island, according to a statement from the World Health Organization (WHO) released here on Saturday.

The new polio case was the first on Sumatra Island and "the 3- year-old girl had onset of paralysis on June 4," said the statement.

Indonesian health officials have said previously that more polio cases were expected in the country as the Health Ministry was still awaiting the laboratory results of a number of cases of acute flaccid paralysis.

On June 28 Indonesian health authorities put the total number of people confirmed to have polio in the country at 65. On the same day, the country's health authorities carried out the second mass immunization campaign through three provinces -- West Java, Banten and Jakarta -- in order to stamp out the disease.

The first emergency "mop-up" campaign at the end of May, together with the second one, targeted to vaccinate more than 6.4 million children under the age of five.

Lampung and Central Java provinces -- considered a high risk -- will be included in the next phase of the large-scale immunization campaign, which will start on August.
