The Rose's Breast Health Collaborative of Texas Wins National Award for Best Practices in Breast Cancer Advocacy

Posted on: Thursday, 18 December 2008, 11:44 CST

WASHINGTON, Dec. 18 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- If you're medically underserved or uninsured in this country, finding health care services is a near-impossible task. However, a Texas program has successfully improved access to breast health services for this population, and serves as a model for other communities. Today, the National Breast Cancer Coalition Fund (NBCCF) awarded its 2008 Best Practices in Breast Cancer Advocacy Award to this program, The Rose's Breast Health Collaborative of Texas (BHCT).

NBCCF's Best Practices in Breast Cancer Advocacy awards are given to a consumer-led grassroots advocacy organization whose strategic, high-impact programs address critical issues in research, access to quality care and public policy in breast cancer and should be replicated. The Collaborative receives $50,000 as the 2008 Best Practices winner.

"NBCCF salutes the Breast Health Collaborative of Texas for its innovative, effective approach towards improving information and access to vulnerable Texas populations," said Fran Visco, president of the National Breast Cancer Coalition Fund. "It exemplifies advocacy in action: moving beyond raising awareness to accomplishing significant change."

The BHCT is a coalition of 62 organizations collaborating under the fiscal management of The Rose to increase access to care for uninsured, low-income, and ethnic populations. NBCCF recognized BHCT for its Breast Health Resource Mapping Project, an interactive, online map mapping project services in seven counties, with plans to eventually cover all 57 Texas counties.

The Rose's BHCT will present its award-winning program at NBCCF's 2009 Advocacy Training Conference, May 2-5, 2009 in Washington, D.C.

The Rose is the second Texas program to win a Best Practices award: the Alamo Breast Cancer Foundation of San Antonio was a 2006 winner.

The National Breast Cancer Coalition is a grassroots membership organization dedicated to ending breast cancer through the power of action and advocacy. Along with its research and education arm, the National Breast Cancer Coalition Fund, the Coalition's main goals are to increase federal funding for breast cancer research; improve access to high-quality health care and breast cancer clinical trials for all women; and expand the influence of breast cancer advocates wherever breast cancer decisions are made. The Best Practices program is funded by the Breast Cancer Fund of National Philanthropic Trust.
