NeuroTexas Institute at St. David's HealthCare Launches 'Consultative Scan Review' Program for Physicians and Patients Seeking Second Opinion

Posted on: Monday, 12 January 2009, 17:04 CST

AUSTIN, Texas, Jan. 12 /PRNewswire/ -- NeuroTexas Institute at St. David's HealthCare today announced the launch of a new program in which Institute physicians provide a timely service by mail to physicians and patients seeking a second opinion. Called the "Consultative Scan Review" Program, it is tailored to cases related to brain tumors and spinal or neurovascular disorders.

"In today's health care, patients should seize opportunities to get a second or even a third opinion when facing a complex brain or spine condition," Kit Fox, M.D., Executive Medical Director at NeuroTexas Institute, said. "The 'Consultative Scan Review' Program gives patients and primary care physicians the opportunity to conduct due diligence and confirm initial findings."

Patients and primary care physicians can contact NeuroTexas Institute by phone at (512) 544-9000 or conveniently complete a scan review request form online at www.NeuroTexasInstitute.com. Upon receipt of the request, a nurse coordinator will contact the patient or physician to coordinate a timely and seamless clinical review of the patient's MRI or CT scans.

"This consultative approach allows patients and primary care physicians to benefit from additional resources and possible alternative treatment options," Michael Webb, M.D., Executive Medical Director at NeuroTexas Institute, said.

According to the National Brain Tumor Society, patients should get a second opinion as soon after the initial diagnosis as possible, preferably before treatment has begun. This will avoid delaying proper treatment. Brain tumors are particularly challenging and complex because of the variety and treatment options available. A second opinion can confirm an initial diagnosis or compare suggested courses of treatment.

Since the program's inception, NeuroTexas Institute has already received international inquiries from Europe and Asia.

A small administrative fee applies for postage of scans and clinical report.
