Canada's Genome Centres Promote Collaboration at International Conference

Posted on: Monday, 19 January 2009, 06:15 CST

SAN DIEGO, Jan. 19 /PRNewswire/ - Canada's six genome centres demonstrated the power of partnerships by hosting their 2nd Annual Canadian Genomics Reception at the International Plant and Animal Genomics Conference in San Diego last week. More than 150 researchers, funders and other international stakeholders enjoyed Canadian hospitality and took advantage of the informal networking event.

"This Canadian reception was a truly positive opportunity for me from the perspective of interacting with key leaders in the genome centres from across Canada," commented John Evey, Vice President for Development at the J. Craig Venter Institute. "The Venter Institute is a very collaborative research entity that has enjoyed productive working relationships with Canadian scientists and institutions in the past, and I believe that additional research partnerships could develop based on conversations at this event."

Dr. Reno Pontarollo, Chief Scientific Officer for Genome Prairie was the Master of Ceremonies at the successful reception.

"To date, our six Canadian genomics centres have led over $1.6 billion in genomics research. The projects are funded 50% by the Canadian government through Genome Canada and 50% by provincial governments, research and academia and industry partners. We want to work with all of you here in the US and abroad."

Sean Barr, Canadian Consul and Commissioner, and Cheryl Rogers, Trade Commissioner, also welcomed the crowd.

This event was sponsored in part by Western Economic Diversification and the Government of Canada.
