Midwest Pulmonary and Critical Care Associates Will Join Aurora Medical Group

MILWAUKEE, Jan. 22 /PRNewswire/ -- Aurora Health Care announced today that the physicians of Midwest Pulmonary and Critical Care Associates have decided to join Aurora Medical Group.

The physicians are Susan Darmstadter, M.D., Michael Flatley, M.D., Paul Guzzetta, M.D., and Mark Plumb, M.D. All are board-certified in pulmonology and critical care medicine, and Dr. Flatley also specializes and is board-certified in the treatment of sleep disorders.

"These four physicians are leading specialists in the care of the most critically ill patients," said Jeff Bailet, M.D., president of Aurora Medical Group. "We will be working with them to raise the level of critical care services throughout our organization."

With the addition of these intensivists, Aurora Medical Group is establishing a division of critical care medicine to bring new emphasis to the care of patients with acute, life-threatening illnesses or injuries. Other specialists in critical care medicine will be recruited.

"We know the people at Aurora well and share their vision for critical care medicine," Dr. Guzzetta said. "My colleagues and I look forward to working with professionals throughout the Aurora organization to find new and better ways to treat patients in intensive care."

The physicians of Midwest Pulmonary and Critical Care Associates practice at Aurora West Allis Medical Center and other area hospitals, and also operate a clinic in Wauwatosa. When the new Aurora Medical Center in the Town of Summit opens next year, they will oversee the intensive care unit there.

"We are particularly excited about establishing intensive care at the new hospital in western Waukesha County," Dr. Guzzetta said. "We will be setting the bar very high there."

In addition to the care provided at the bedside, all intensive care patients at all of Aurora's hospitals throughout eastern Wisconsin are monitored via Aurora eICU Care. The system uses telemedicine technology, including early warning software and advanced video and electronic monitoring, to connect off-site critical care specialists to ICU patients. The system has been shown to reduce ICU mortality rates, decrease complications, shorten the length of hospital stays and reduce costs.

Two of the physicians of Midwest Pulmonary and Critical Care Associates, Drs. Guzzetta and Plumb, are among the intensivists who work at the Aurora eICU Care command center on Milwaukee's south side. From there, specialists in critical care medicine monitor the conditions of patients in more than 250 intensive care beds, complementing the care patients receive at the bedside.
