Power3 Announces Results of Studies Measuring Levels of Protein Biomarkers From Blood Serum to Diagnose Neurological Disorders

THE WOODLANDS, Texas, July 5 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Power3 Medical Products, Inc. (PWRM.PK) today announced results from recently completed studies measuring levels of biomarkers from blood serum to diagnose and follow patients with neurological disorders involving muscle control. These studies were comprised of more than 600 patients. They revealed that 21 of 34 blood serum protein biomarkers are useful in distinguishing patients with ALS (Lou Gehrig's disease) and Parkinson's diseases.
Definitive diagnostic tests for the neurological disorders such as ALS, Parkinson's and the "like" disorders that display similar symptoms but with a different prognosis, is an issue of particular importance to neurologists. Such tests may potentially provide earlier treatment decisions and options to prevent irreparable damage, and thereby improve patient outcomes. Toward this end, Dr. Ira L. Goldknopf, Chief Scientific Officer and his team of protein scientists at Power3 Medical Products, Inc. are collaborating with Dr. Stan Appel, Global Opinion Leader on ALS and Chair of the Department of Neurology at The Methodist Hospital Neurological Institute (Houston), and his team of neurologists to find protein biomarkers for building such diagnostic tests.
"Of the 34 blood serum protein biomarkers that have determined to have utility in the diagnosis of neurodegenerative diseases, a subgroup of 21 have been found to display usefulness in diagnosis of these neurological disorders," said Dr. Goldknopf. "Among that group are 8 proteins that are elevated and 5 others that are depressed in levels in the serum from ALS patients, whereas there are 10 proteins elevated and 9 depressed in the serum from patients with Parkinson's disease. The identities of these proteins and their associations with one or both types of neurological disorders offer the means by which patients with these diseases can be differentiated from normal individuals and from each other. Such tests may also offer valuable clues for novel therapies as well as unique opportunities to monitor disease progression."
Dr. Appel noted, "the proteins identified in conjunction with Power3 represent promising biomarkers for ALS and Parkinson's diseases. A main problem to date is that there is a lack of biomarkers and tests for early diagnosis, prognosis, and guidelines for therapy for neurodegenerative diseases. We are pleased with the progress that we have made, and feel these biomarkers and tests offer great promise for improving the diagnosis and treatment of our patients."
Using these protein biomarkers, a series of tests are being developed and evaluated, and Pre-IDE applications are being made to the United States Food and Drug Administration. The Company and its collaborators will be publishing these findings in the near term.
