Lemon Grove Care & Rehabilitation Center Responds to Health Department Announcement

LEMON GROVE, Calif., Feb. 13 /PRNewswire/ -- Lemon Grove Care & Rehabilitation Center has responded to the California Department of Health's announcement of a "AA" citation issued to the 158-bed skilled nursing facility in Lemon Grove.

"We stand by the quality of care we deliver," said Scott Kirby, CEO. "We disagree with the Department's assessment of the facts surrounding this tragic accident, and have appealed the citation," he added.

The May 2008 event involved an alert and oriented resident who was burned when a jacket the resident was wearing caught fire while the resident was smoking. The resident had previously undergone a standard Smoking Safety Screening assessment, and was able to smoke without restrictions. The resident was in a designated smoking area with other residents at the time of the accident.

"We express again our deep sympathy to the resident's family for their loss," said Shawn Laird, a 31-year veteran of the healthcare industry and Lemon Grove's Director of Nursing. She added that the resident was "a valued member of our resident community and is greatly missed," and also that "I stand by my caregivers and the care they render every day, including the care and attention given to this resident."

Lemon Grove Health Associates LLC, the operator of Lemon Grove Care & Rehabilitation Center since 2003, has not had any prior AA citations.
