CAS Medical Systems, Inc. Announces Presentation of Test Data From New Near Infra-Red Spectroscopy Technology

Posted on: Tuesday, 5 July 2005, 12:01 CDT

BRANFORD, Conn., July 5 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- CAS Medical Systems, Inc. (BULLETIN BOARD: CAMY) announces acceptance of an abstract demonstrating initial validation of their cerebral oximeter for presentation at the American Society of Anesthesiologists (ASA) Annual Meeting in October 2005. The abstract, entitled "Using the CAS Cerebral Oximeter to Estimate Cerebral Venous Oxygen Saturation," details the performance of the new CAS monitor on healthy volunteers in a study conducted by Duke University Medical Center, Durham, NC. The abstract is expected to be made available on the ASA website (http://www.asahq.org/) in early July. Data from this study was also presented by David MacLeod, FRCA, Assistant Clinical Professor in the Department of Anesthesiology, at the 8th Annual Duke Cardiothoracic and Regional Update recently at Hilton Head Island, SC.

The CAS cerebral oximeter utilizes the Company's patented Near Infra-Red Spectroscopy (NIRS) technology, a non-invasive, optically-based technique, to monitor brain oxygenation continuously by determining absolute cerebral tissue oxygen saturation. In combination with pulse oximetry, the CAS monitor may be used to estimate the cerebral venous oxygen saturation. Results from the study show that the CAS cerebral oximeter shows a high level of accuracy and consistency when compared to reference co-oximetry measurements. The study at Duke was funded by a Phase II Small Business Innovative Research grant from the National Institutes of Health. The data from this study has been submitted to the Food and Drug Administration as part of the Company's 510(k) Premarket Notification of its intent to market the NIRS device.

Louis P. Scheps, President and CEO of CAS Medical Systems, Inc. states, "We believe that the initial results demonstrate that our NIRS technology is a reliable, accurate method to non-invasively determine absolute regional brain tissue oxygenation." Mr. Scheps continued, "We look forward to expanding our clinical studies this year while developing a product for market introduction in the second half of 2006. It is our belief that this technology will have applications in surgical, intensive care, and emergency settings."
