Robarts Research Institute Installs Imaging Magnet and Console from Varian, Inc.

PALO ALTO, Calif., Feb. 19 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ — Varian, Inc.
(NasdaqGS: VARI) announced today the Robarts Research Institute has installed
a Varian 7T magnet and MRI console as part of its Centre for Functional and
Metabolic Mapping. This imaging centre also houses a Varian 31 cm 9.4T
horizontal system as well as a 3T whole-body MR imaging system. These scanners
are used for in-vivo studies of brain structure and function. This includes
the assessment of brain metabolism, physiology, cognitive function and
vascular dynamics, both in normal and research patient populations, using a
variety of advanced nuclear magnetic resonance imaging and spectroscopy
techniques.

The official opening ceremony took place on February 10th, 2009 with the
Premier of the Province of Ontario, the Attorney-General, the Minister of
Research and Innovation and a number of Federal parliament members in
attendance.

Robarts Research Institute is a non-profit medical research facility in
London, Ontario, Canada with a staff of more than 600 people. Robarts
scientists include physicians and physicists, biologists and biomedical
engineers, and the range of diseases they study include heart disease, stroke,
diabetes, Alzheimer’s disease, and many forms of cancer. It is well known for
its medical imaging research. Robarts was amalgamated with The University of
Western Ontario
in July 2007.
