Posted on: Thursday, 19 February 2009, 12:52 CST

LOS ANGELES, Feb. 19 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- To address the unmet and undiagnosed health needs of students from one of Los Angeles' poorest and most underserved communities, Alliance College-Ready Public School's College-Ready Academy High School #4, located at 644 West 17th Street, Los Angeles, 90015 will host a free school community health fair on Saturday, February 21, 2009 from 11:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.

Students and families attending this free school community event will have access to health screening, medical services and physician consultations. Participants will receive free nutrition, fitness, substance abuse prevention, parenting, and immigration information. Vision and dental exams will also be available. Thousands of dollars in free medical care, diagnostic screening, haircuts and health services will be provided at no charge to students and their families.

"We are delighted to be joined this year by the Eisner Pediatric and Family Clinic, the new state of the art UCLA Mobile Eye Clinic, Planned Parenthood, Sound Body/Sound Mind, Clinica Cuidado Latino and other participating agencies working to improve the health and well being of our families," said Carmen Vazquez-Mancini, the school's Assistant Principal. "At our first health fair last year, several of our students and parents discovered they had diabetes and were connected to physicians for treatment. Others were diagnosed with high blood pressure and now, having received excellent medical care, have the condition well under control."

Since 2004 Alliance College-Ready Public Schools, a nonprofit charter management organization, has led a highly successful network of small, personalized, high achieving public charter schools. Alliance students, 97% of whom are poor, live in LA's traditionally lowest performing communities and achieve the highest levels of academic excellence. One hundred percent of Alliance high school graduates were accepted to college - 80% to four-year universities including Wellesley, Vassar, Bryn Mawr, Mills College, Dartmouth, Pomona College, UC Berkeley and UCLA.
