The Forensic Specialties Accreditation Board's Comments on the National Academy of Sciences' Report - 'Strengthening Forensic Science in the United States'

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo., Feb. 25 /PRNewswire/ -- The Forensic Specialties Accreditation Board (FSAB) applauds the National Academy of Sciences' (NAS) report. Recognizing national concerns and needs in the forensic sciences, the NAS report provides insight toward the path forward. Its recommendations should be implemented. Many efforts to improve and enhance the forensic sciences have been propounded, but have suffered from the lack of uniform provisions, a national mandate, and the resources and funding for effective implementation.

The FSAB was created in 2000, with the support of the American Academy of Forensic Sciences and the National Institute of Justice, as an oversight board to ensure the quality of certification programs for forensic scientists offered by a growing number of organizations and to create uniformity in standards for the components of the credentialing process. This includes verification of proper credentials, using validated testing methods, mandating continuing education, requiring periodic re-certification, and the inclusion of an ethics policy. Eight boards have been approved including ABC, ABFA, ABFDE, ABFO, ABFT, ABMDI, BFDE, and IIFES.

"Individual forensic scientist / examiner certification is an essential component of a credible forensic science service," according to Yale H. Caplan, Ph.D., DABFT, President of the FSAB.
