D&W Fresh Markets, Family Fare and VG's Expand Discounted Generic Drug Program

Posted on: Monday, 2 March 2009, 05:00 CST

Now 90-day prescriptions for $10 - Plus More Women's Health Medications

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich., March 2 /PRNewswire/ -- Starting March 1, 2009, D&W Fresh Market, Family Fare and VG's pharmacies will expand their generic drug program to 90-day prescriptions for only $10 - now there are two programs offering lower prices on over 300 generic drugs to meet the healthcare needs and healthcare budgets of our customers. These pharmacies are also increasing the number of women's health medications as part of the generic drug program offer.

This new initiative expands the program introduced in November 2008 that provides a $4 price for more than 300 generic drugs prescribed in 30-day supplies. It also complements several other programs these stores are offering customers to help them stretch their food, fuel, healthcare and household budgets, including:

  • Bonus Savings (lowering the price on over 4000 items throughout the store)
  • Advertised Weekly Deals in the newspaper ads and online
  • Fuel Rewards everyday based on cross promotion offers
  • Spartan private label products which cost an average of 20% less than most national brands
  • Meals Made Easy - recipes based on weekly-advertised specials, offering nutritious meals for $5-10 for a family of four. Recipes are conveniently located next to the sale items, and are reviewed weekly by Spartan Stores nutritionist.

"Our expanded generic drug program is another example of the many ways we are making it easier for customers to stretch their food, healthcare, and household dollars," said Alan Hartline, Executive Vice President Merchandising. "Our customers can continue to rely on the expert health counsel and friendly service our team of professional pharmacists consistently offer."

Expanded Women's Health Generics

D&W Fresh Market, Family Fare and VG's Pharmacies are also increasing the number of women's health medications they offer at the discounted price. These include prescription drugs such as tamoxifen to treat breast cancer and pre-natal vitamins.

In-Store Pharmacy Program Specifics

The $4.00 - 30-day generic drug program and the 90-day $10 generic drug program covers more than 300 drugs. A complete list of medications (by brand, condition, and generic name) are listed on websites, see below for addresses. Conditions include: allergies, anti-inflammatory, antibiotics, anticoagulants, antidepressants, antifungals, antihistamine, antipsychotics, antiviral, anxiety, asthma, cancer, cholesterol, cough/cold, dental health, diabetes, diuretic, ear analgesic, gastrointestinal, glaucoma, gout, heart, heart/blood pressure, hormone, muscle relaxant, nervous system, Parkinson's, skin treatments, supplements, thyroid, urinary analgesic, urinary tract, and vitamins.

Generic vs. Name Brand

Generic drugs are a less expensive alternative to name-brand drugs. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA), requires that all drugs be safe and effective. Since generics use the same active ingredients and are shown to work the same way in the body, they have the same risks and benefits as their brand-name counterparts. After a company's exclusive right to market a medication expires, other companies are allowed to develop generic equivalents - usually at a much lower cost. Consumers interested in saving money on prescriptions should ask their doctor or pharmacist at their neighborhood D&W Fresh Market, Family Fare and VG's to determine if a generic drug is available for their prescription and if it is right for them.
