"The Consumer Health World Awards enable leading organizations to share advances in health, wellness and technology, as well as efficiencies in healthcare delivery," said
Tele-ophthalmology is the virtual delivery of vision impairment diagnosis from doctors in large cities to remote areas. The technology enables ophthalmologists and trained vision technicians from Hyderabad's LV Prasad Eye Institute to diagnose patients in remote locations by virtually viewing their eyelids, conjunctivas, corneas, anterior chambers, irises, pupil reactions and lenses. When required, patients are referred for further tele-ophthalmology services or to secondary eye care centers, where they can receive prescriptions or other treatment.
Because most of the patients who receive tele-ophthalmology treatment would not otherwise ever have access to an eye doctor, the program is transforming the way care is made available to rural Indians.
LVPEI professionals use a video slit lamp, a high-end camera that provides a stereoscopic view of the eye. These virtual eye exams include patient registration, vision screening, refractive examination, a real-time slit lamp examination, consultation and advice.
"While we have conducted a successful proof-of-concept at this stage, we are confident this program will be especially effective because of what we have learned from similar programs we have pioneered, such as Tele-EKG," said
Satyam, through the Satyam Foundation, is renowned for its corporate social responsibility efforts, all of which rely on technology to enhance the lives of underprivileged Indians.
