Polio case near Angolan capital "one-off case": health officials

Luanda, July 5 (Xinhua) -- Angola's Health authorities said a case of polio reported near capital Luanda last month was an " isolated case" that does not jeopardize its drive to eradicate the disease by next year.

The Health Ministry spokesman Carlos Alberto told local media that after a one-year-old boy was confirmed having polio, about 300 homes in the municipality of Cacuaco, north of Luanda, where inspected by health workers.

The child in question had not received a polio vaccination and no further cases of the acute infectious viral disease were reported, added Alberto.

Mass polio vaccinations of children have taken place across Angola for the past two years and a fresh inoculation campaign gets underway later this year.
