"It is a great honor to be chosen to speak to this prestigious group, who represent America's pharmacy benefit managers (PBMs) and are responsible for administering prescription drug plans for more than 210 million Americans," said Ms. Anderson. "The specialty pharmacy market is relatively new and is growing rapidly, especially with the growing number of complex chronic conditions that require more of the latest highly-engineered pharmaceuticals. In this environment, it is important that specialty pharmacies can demonstrate that their operations meet national standards. Accreditation can help with that goal, and also reassure consumers with a seal of approval."
The session, "Overview and Value of Specialty Pharmacy Accreditation," will offer participants insight into URAC's standards development process, a review of the Specialty Pharmacy standards, as well as a view of the accreditation process from an accredited organization perspective.
Specialty Pharmacies offer a high-touch, comprehensive system of pharmacological care that allows patients with chronic illnesses and complex disease states to receive expert therapy management and support tailored to their individual needs. URAC's accreditation standards were developed through close consultation with URAC's Pharmacy Accreditation Advisory Group, which includes pharmacy professional organizations, pharmacy benefits managers, health plans, and other stakeholders. The Specialty Pharmacy accreditation program is designed to promote industry best practices, encourage quality improvement, and protect and empower consumers.
The URAC Specialty Pharmacy accreditation includes five modules:
- Module 1: Core Organizational Quality Standards
- Module 2: Customer Service, Communications, and Disclosure Standards
- Module 3: Specialty Drug Management Standards
- Module 4: Pharmacy Operations Standards
- Module 5: Patient Management
"Our comprehensive approach ensures that we have standards in place for each major interface with the pharmacy, health plan, and the patient," continued Ms. Anderson.
Since 2007, URAC has added five products to its Pharmacy Quality Management(R) suite with 31 organizations accredited or in-process for accreditation. To read more about the URAC Pharmacy Quality Management Suite of products go to www.pqm.urac.org.
