Kaiser Permanente Names Jed Weissberg, MD, as Senior Vice President, Quality and Care Delivery Excellence

Posted on: Tuesday, 14 April 2009, 14:30 CDT

OAKLAND, Calif., April 14 /PRNewswire/ -- Kaiser Permanente has announced that Jed Weissberg, MD, has been named senior vice president, quality and care delivery excellence. Weissberg has been with Kaiser Permanente for 25 years and has served as associate executive director, quality and performance improvement for The Permanente Federation since 1998.

In his new role, Weissberg will partner with the Permanente Medical Groups, Kaiser Foundation Hospitals, and regional and national leaders to oversee Kaiser Permanente's national quality agenda, ensuring members and patients receive high-quality care and service. He will lead Kaiser Permanente's national quality and service department and clinical systems support team. He will report to the Kaiser Foundation Health Plan and Hospitals board of directors for clinical quality and hospital performance. He plans to continue practicing medicine on a limited basis.

"With his expertise in quality and his experience working with physicians and hospitals, Dr. Weissberg is the ideal person to continue to move Kaiser Permanente's vision of care excellence forward," said George Halvorson, chairman and chief executive officer, Kaiser Permanente. "His wealth of experience as a practicing physician and national quality leader make him the perfect person to partner with the Permanente Medical Groups and to lead the work ahead."

Weissberg is stepping into his new role following the recent retirement of Louise Liang, MD, who continues to consult with Kaiser Permanente on special projects.

"As good as Kaiser Permanente is now in terms of care and service quality, with the speed with which we continue to advance and improve, we are soon going to reach a point where there will be a serious gap between our nearest competitor and us," Weissberg said. "I am excited about the opportunity to lead that charge."

Weissberg joined The Permanente Medical Group in Kaiser Permanente's Northern California region in 1984. In 1994, he became the physician-in-chief of the Fremont Medical Center, where he led a staff of 450 full-time employees and oversaw the planning and construction of a 106-bed hospital. Weissberg is board certified in internal medicine and gastroenterology and received his medical degree at Albert Einstein College of Medicine in New York City. He holds a bachelor's degree from the University of Pennsylvania.
