Health Care Policy Analyst Gives SALGBA Attendees a Glimpse of the Future

Posted on: Sunday, 19 April 2009, 23:01 CDT

ST. PAUL, Minn., April 20 /PRNewswire/ -- There may be no one better positioned than Jim O'Connell to grasp and share with attendees at the 2009 State and Local Government Benefits Association (SALGBA) conference the complexity of the health care issues the Obama administration faces.

James J. O'Connell, Ph.D. has been monitoring health care policy issues since he was chief legislative assistant to the late Senator Jacob Javits (R-New York). Now a well-known legislative and congressional analyst, O'Connell also is executive government relations consultant for Ceridian, the human resources service provider.

"US healthcare policy is likely to see more change from 2009 to 2012 than at any other time in the past half-century," says O'Connell. "With costs soaring, the number of uninsured and underinsured rising, and the economy slowing, health insurance affordability and availability have become one of the greatest concerns of employers, workers and their families."

At his Tuesday, April 28 presentation at the Omni Interlocken near downtown Denver, CO, O'Connell will describe some of the most pressing health care policy issues, including:

  • extending coverage to the uninsured,
  • slowing skyrocketing costs,
  • employer and individual mandates and
  • making US tax law more neutral between employer-provided and individually purchased coverage.

O'Connell's presentation is sponsored by Minnesota Life Group Insurance. He will give it again during a May 7 webinar, also sponsored by Minnesota Life. O'Connell's insights will be helpful to HR decision-makers, benefits managers and analysts, benefits brokers and consultants, and health and wellness practice leaders.
