BAC offers outreach resources for parents to gain valuable skills and tools to help answer questions on how to effectively handle issues specific to children on the Autism Spectrum. Outreach Programs include, free lecture series, a resource library, one on one counseling, video modeling support, peer socialization group and art classes for children on the spectrum and their siblings.
Calendar of events:
Free Lecture Series:
This lecture will focus on the challenges of getting children with autism to sleep through the night.
Summer is here! This lecture will provide some strategies for families that can make their summer vacations more pleasant or their child with autism and, in turn, the whole family!
We have many categories of books relating to autism, including bio-medical information, physical therapy, occupational therapy, auditory integration therapy, sibling issues, diet, peer socialization and many other topics. Our media library contains a large selection of lectures and workshops from leaders in the field that can be checked out for viewing at no charge.
One on One counseling:
This service is made available by appointment in person or on the phone. We have a group of experienced parent mentors that will guide and support a family that has just received a diagnosis through the first crucial steps of securing therapy services and family support services.
Video Modeling Support:
We have created a media library of education “movies” designed to teach children with autism specific skills. These short films model skills that children with autism have difficulty learning in a typical way. Some of our topics include: Imitation Skill, Social Skills, Playing appropriately, Yoga, Brushing teeth, Dancing, Sharing with Peers, Eating Lunch, Washing Hands. We have found that teaching this way supports the visual nature of children with autism and provides them with an additional tool to help them learn a skill. All of our video modeling discs are available for families to borrow.
BAC PEER SOCIALIZATION GROUP:
Every Tuesday BAC hosts an afterschool program dedicated to providing both children with autism and typical children an opportunity to play together to provide our children with autism a safe environment to practice play and socialization skills with typical peers. In turn, the student volunteers are rewarded by “teaching” their friends with autism how to play, socialize and make friends.
SATURDAY MORNING ART CLASS FOR CHILDREN WITH AUTISM AND THEIR SIBLINGS AT CMA:
This program is aimed at creating a supportive and enriching environment for families of children with autism. Siblings are often overlooked in the dynamic of a family affected with autism. This program provides a unique art experience for the whole family to participate in.
