Natural Health Growing Field

Posted on: Thursday, 7 July 2005, 15:00 CDT

The Canterbury College of Natural Medicine is increasing its range of courses for people who want a career in the growing field of natural health.

The Christchurch-based college has developed a New Zealand Qualifications Authority-approved course for people who want to become professional reflexologists and relaxation massage therapists.

Reflexology involves applying pressure points on a patient's hands and feet to help to release tension, eliminate toxins and stimulate natural healing mechanisms.

The new Diploma in Reflexology and Relaxation Massage is a full- time, year-long course.

The Level 5 diploma requires students to spend three days a week at the college and two days of self- directed learning at home.

In Britain, reflexology is moving into hospitals, hospices, the workplace, beauty therapy and massage therapy, says course tutor and Reflexology New Zealand secretary Xanthe Ashton.

Reflexology is also gaining in popularity in New Zealand, whether it be practised alone or with other natural therapies such as massage, she says.

Ashton established a home-based practice after moving to New Zealand three and a half years ago.

The college has also developed a course for people who want to work with medicinal plants but not as medical herbalists. The Level 4 NZQA-approved Certificate in Herbal Studies provides students with the knowledge required for herb growing or manufacturing, or growing nursery plants.

Studied mostly by distance learning with seminars and field trips, this course covers herbal horticulture, medicinal plants, the manufacture of herbal preparations and related business skills.

The Certificate in Herbal Studies can be studied for one year full time or two years part time.

The college also offers foundation courses for people considering a career in natural medicine and a range of professional courses for aspiring practitioners.
