United States Recognizes Leading Scottish Scientist for Disease Research

Sir Philip Cohen to be inducted into National Academy of Sciences for groundbreaking work in biochemistry and biology

WASHINGTON, April 22 /PRNewswire/ — Sir Philip Cohen of Scotland’s University of Dundee will be inducted into the U.S. National Academy of Sciences (NAS) during its 146th annual meeting on Saturday, April 25 at 8:00 p.m. at the NAS building for his excellence in original scientific research. Sir Philip is one of only four Scottish scientists ever inducted into the NAS, one of the highest honors given to a scientist or engineer in the United States and a rare honor for non-U.S. scientists.

As Director of the MRC Protein Phosphorylation Unit and the Scottish Institute for Cell Signalling at the University of Dundee, Sir Philip has advanced the field of biochemistry. In particular, he has studied abnormal protein phosphorylation as a cause or consequence of cancer, diabetes and inflammatory disease. Under Sir Philip’s direction, scientists have identified new proteins as targets for a number of breakthrough therapies today, as well as new diabetes and cancer drugs in development. For instance, protein kinase inhibitors have been approved for clinical use as anti-cancer agents, including Gleevec, a drug that has helped turn a previously fatal form of leukemia into a manageable disease.

Sir Philip’s contribution to the field of life sciences is demonstrated by his longstanding commitment to collaboration across the industry. Recently, Sir Philip helped identify the Ubiquitin Proteasome System (UPS) as a promising new source for key drug targets and is part of a global UPS research program partnering life sciences company Millipore with the Universities of Glasgow, Strathclyde and Edinburgh, and Mount Sinai Hospital in Toronto.

Since being appointed to a Lectureship in Dundee in October 1971, Sir Philip was elected a Fellow of both The Royal Society of London and The Royal Society of Edinburgh in 1984, was knighted by the Queen in 1998 and has received honorary doctorates from five Universities. He was the world’s second most cited scientist from 1993-2003 in the field of Biology and Biochemistry and has been instrumental in attracting a range of companies and world-class scientists to the University of Dundee.

There are currently just over 2,000 active NAS members. Among the NAS’s renowned members are Albert Einstein, Robert Oppenheimer, Thomas Edison, Orville Wright, and Alexander Graham Bell. Over 180 living Academy members have won Nobel Prizes.
