Cleveland Clinic, University Hospitals and MetroHealth Collaborate on Free Medical Clinic May 2-3

Posted on: Monday, 27 April 2009, 08:37 CDT

Cleveland's Free Event Is One Of Nation's Largest

CLEVELAND, April 27 /PRNewswire/ -- Cleveland's three leading hospital systems -- Cleveland Clinic, University Hospitals and MetroHealth -- will join forces to staff one of the nation's largest free medical clinics May 2-3 at the Cuyahoga County Fairgrounds in Berea, Ohio.

The event, organized by Remote Area Medical (RAM) Ohio, will bring together doctors, nurses and additional medical personnel to offer free medical, dental and vision care to the uninsured and underinsured.

Cleveland Clinic, University Hospitals and MetroHealth, as well as other hospitals and private practices in Northeast Ohio, will provide more than 1,000 doctors, nurses and medical, dental and vision professionals during the two days. All told, nearly 2,000 community members have volunteered to support this event.

"In a down economy, where many have been left without insurance coverage, this partnership is unprecedented, and shows how a city can truly unify to help each other," said Gary Hoffman, M.D., Cleveland Clinic.

"Cleveland is a resilient city and although these are hard times, we are proud to take our services on the road and offer care to those in need," said Jeff Ponsky, M.D., University Hospitals.

This free medical event will open its doors at 6:00 a.m. on May 2 and 3. Access to the parking lot will open at midnight on both days. This is a statewide multi-sector collaborative. Services will be provided on a first-come, first-served basis. No proof of income or citizenship is required. Participants should expect to wait in long lines and understand that it may not be possible to serve everyone. For more information, visit www.ramohio.org.
