Pennsylvania Dental Association Announces Winners of Annual Statewide Third-Grade Student Poster Contest

HARRISBURG, Pa., April 27 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Makenzie Fritz, a third-grade student at Our Lady of Hungary Regional School in Northampton County, will receive a $1,000 educational bond for winning first-place in the Pennsylvania Dental Association's (PDA) 2009 National Children's Dental Health Month (NCDHM) statewide poster contest.

Makenzie's poster will be reproduced as bookmarks, which will be distributed to all of Pennsylvania's public libraries. A PDA member dentist will present Makenzie with her framed winning poster and bookmarks at an upcoming school awards assembly in June.

In addition to Makenzie's prizes, Our Lady of Hungary Regional School and her teacher will each receive a $250 prize for participating in PDA's contest.

Her winning poster, "A Perfect Smile Wins by an Extra Mile," depicts a track meet in which a sparkling white tooth wins the race against snarling plaque. Vibrantly colored and skillfully drawn, Makenzie demonstrated that she truly understands the importance of good oral health.

"Camp Brush A Lot" was the theme of second-place winner Kyle Pifer's poster. Kyle, a third-grade student at Mountain View Elementary in Dauphin County, drew teeth roasting marshmallows on their toothbrushes over a campfire. Complete with a tent and a cooler of floss, at Camp Brush A Lot "we never miss a dirty spot!" Kyle will receive a $500 educational savings bond.

Third-place winner, Hailey Caivano "Shut Out Plaque and Tooth Decay" in a baseball game where plaque and decay go head to head against floss and toothpaste. Hailey, a third-grader at George Wolf Elementary in Northampton County, will receive a $250 educational savings bond.

The winning posters were selected from 100 well-designed and creative regional finalist posters submitted to the PDA Central Office for final judging. The contest was open to third-grade students in any Pennsylvania public, private or charter school. It is estimated that 20,000 third-grade students across Pennsylvania participated in this year's poster contest.
