PCI's Response to Swine Flu Evolves to Keep Pace with Emerging Health Threat

SAN DIEGO, April 28 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- PCI continues to closely monitor the swine flu outbreak both in Mexico where we have major programming and staff, as well as in San Diego. Since Thursday, PCI staff in San Diego, Washington, DC and throughout Mexico, have diligently kept pace with this growing health issue, as we determine our organizational priorities and focus our attention and resources where they could do the most good for the greatest number of people.

Building upon community contacts and partners in the media throughout Mexico, PCI is ensuring that practical, easy to follow guidance on prevention, diagnosis and treatment will be made available to vulnerable people. PCI is supporting and mobilizing its staff and partners in more than 13 Mexican states, and in San Diego County, to ensure that the health care systems, infrastructure and capacity that already exist can be readily adapted and utilized to manage the situation effectively.

If we are facing a pandemic, the fall out in terms of economies, food security, and vulnerability in general will require robust multi-pronged integrated programming--it won't just be the flu we are dealing with, but its associated impacts in already vulnerable communities.
