Martin Crane, M.D., Assumes Chairmanship of the Federation of State Medical Boards

Massachusetts physician will lead organization representing the nation's 70 medical boards

DALLAS, May 14 /PRNewswire/ -- During the Federation of State Medical Boards' (FSMB) 97th Annual Meeting, in Arlington, Va., Martin Crane, M.D., assumed the position of chair of the organization's board of directors. The former chair of the Massachusetts Board of Registration in Medicine and a longtime patient safety advocate, Dr. Crane will lead the not-for-profit organization that serves as the national authority in the field of medical regulation.

"He brings strong leadership abilities to the FSMB, as well as a wealth of experience in medical regulatory and patient safety issues."

As the FSMB's chief elected official, Dr. Crane will preside over meetings of the board of directors, provide leadership in governing the organization and represent the FSMB to the leadership of other organizations. He has been active with the FSMB's board of directors since 2004, serving on the Executive Committee since 2006 and as chair-elect during the previous year. In 2005, he chaired the FSMB's Patient Safety Workgroup.

From 2000 to 2008, Dr. Crane served on the Massachusetts Board of Registration in Medicine, which regulates the more than 30,000 physicians licensed to practice in the state. In addition to leading the board as chair for five years, Dr. Crane chaired the board's Patient Care Assessment, Licensing and Data Repository committees.

Dr. Crane has been involved in a wide array of quality assurance and improvement programs for more than 30 years and spoken extensively on patient safety and adverse event reporting systems. In 2007, he was appointed to the Step 3 Committee of the United States Medical Licensing Examination, the three-step examination for medical licensure in the United States co-sponsored by the FSMB and the National Board of Medical Examiners. In 2006, U.S. Secretary of Education Spellings appointed Dr. Crane to the National Committee on Foreign Medical Education and Accreditation, which reviews the standards used by foreign countries to accredit medical schools and determines whether those standards are comparable to standards used to accredit U.S. medical schools.

A board-certified obstetrician/gynecologist, Dr. Crane is a graduate of Princeton University and Harvard Medical School with training in general surgery at the University of Colorado Medical Center and a residency in Obstetrics and Gynecology at the Boston Hospital for Women. He is a Diplomate of the National Board of Medical Examiners and has also performed endocrine research at the Royal Karolinska Institute in Sweden.

Dr. Crane has served his home community of Hingham, Mass., as a member of the Board of Health and the Board of Selectmen, which he also chaired. In 2005, Governor Romney appointed him as a voting member of the Martha's Vineyard Commission, a regional land use planning authority.

Dr. Crane holds the rank of Commander in the Medical Corps of the U.S. Navy Reserves and has served as a member of the executive committee for the Medical and Dental Staff. In December 2005, Crane received the Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal for his superior service.
