St. John's Mercy Health Care of St. Louis Gets New President, CEO

Posted on: Saturday, 9 July 2005, 00:00 CDT

Jul. 9--Denny DeNarvaez will become president and chief executive of St. John's Mercy Health Care on July 25, the Sisters of Mercy Health System said Friday.

DeNarvaez, 49, was president of Abbott Northwestern Hospital, the largest hospital in Minneapolis, from 2001 until her abrupt resignation in December. Abbott is part of Allina Hospitals & Clinics, a nonprofit health system operating in Minnesota and western Wisconsin.

DeNarvaez couldn't be reached Friday. Through Barbara Meyer, a Mercy Health System spokeswoman, DeNarvaez said she resigned because she and her boss at Allina had opposing visions for Abbott Northwestern.

DeNarvaez headed several expansion projects at Abbott, including a $120 million heart hospital. St. John's Mercy Medical Center in Creve Coeur, the largest hospital in the St. John's health system, is about a third of the way through a seven-year campus makeover. Its $140 million heart hospital and emergency center opens next year.

At St. John's Mercy Health Care, Abbott will replace Michael Morgan, who resigned as president and chief executive in November 2004. In December, nurses at St. John's Mercy Medical Center began a 5 1/2-week strike that pitted some nurses against others and left strained relations between union members and managers.

Mark Stauder, chief operating officer for St. John's Mercy, and John Sullivan, chief operating officer for Sisters of Mercy Health System, served as co-presidents during the search for Morgan's successor.
