Long Island Jewish Medical Center and Winthrop University Hospital have been singled out as the only ones in the state to obtain a double-star designation for overall angioplasty outcomes in a study covering 2001 to 2003.
The New York State Department of Health released the report, assessing risk-adjusted angioplasty outcomes at 45 hospitals and more than 270 cardiologists.
Angioplasty is a procedure in which stents are used to improve the flow of blood.
Hospitals and physicians were given double-star rankings for risk- adjusted survival rates significantly better than the state average.
Five doctors statewide, including two on Long Island, also got the double-star designation for overall angioplasty outcomes.
Dr. Barry Kaplan, director of cardiac catheterization at LIJ, and Dr. Ezra Deutzh, director of the cardiac catheterization laboratory at Southside Hospital in Bay Shore, got two stars. Doctors at Mt. Sinai Medical Center, Buffalo General and Lenox Hill Hospital also were singled out with the designation.
The rankings are based on mortality rates adjusted for risk factors.
The DOH report revealed that LIJ performs procedures on the highest-risk patients and still has one of the best success rates in the state, said Dr. Stanley Katz, vice president of cardiovascular services for the North Shore-Long Island Jewish Health System.
