Philadelphia Police Commissioner Charles H. Ramsey to Receive MHASP's 2009 Bell of Hope Award

Dr. Trevor Hadley Will Receive MHASP's Leadership Award

PHILADELPHIA, May 20 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Philadelphia Police Commissioner Charles H. Ramsey has been chosen to receive the prestigious Bell of Hope Award presented by the Mental Health Association of Southeastern Pennsylvania (MHASP), one of the largest mental health advocacy and peer-support service organizations in the United States. Mayor Michael Nutter will present the award at MHASP's annual dinner, Thursday, May 21, at the Sheraton Society Hill Hotel, 2nd and Walnut Streets, Philadelphia. The event will begin at 6 p.m.; the awards ceremony will begin at 7 p.m. Guest speakers will include Dr. Arthur C. Evans, Jr., Director, Philadelphia Department of Behavioral Health/Mental Retardation Services. CBS-3 News Anchor Susan Barnett will be the Emcee.

"We are honoring Commissioner Ramsey because of the Philadelphia Police Department's extensive efforts, under his leadership, to work with the behavioral health community to adopt the Crisis Intervention Team (CIT) model, an award-winning, lifesaving community policing initiative," said MHASP CEO Bill Dinwiddie. "We are excited about presenting the award to Commissioner Ramsey because of his endeavors on behalf of Philadelphians who have psychiatric disabilities, including his enthusiastic support of CIT as well as his sensitivity to mental health needs during crises in the city."

MHASP presents the Bell of Hope Award annually to an individual or individuals, organization, foundation or corporation whose significant and far-reaching contributions have benefited people who have mental illnesses.

Dr. Trevor Hadley, Director of the Center for Mental Health Policy and Services Research of the University of Pennsylvania Department of Psychiatry, will receive MHASP's Leadership Award for his contributions to mental health system transformation. MHASP's Leadership Awards recognize outstanding leadership in mental health policy, services, education, advocacy, administration and/or research. "Throughout his distinguished career, Dr. Hadley has made extraordinary contributions to a broad range of mental health policy and research initiatives that have helped transform the mental health system and have promoted the recovery of individuals with mental illnesses," said Dinwiddie. David L. Cohen, Executive Vice President of Comcast Corporation and Chair of the Trustee Board and the Executive Committee of Penn Medicine, will present the award.

Proceeds from the dinner directly support the education, advocacy and service programs of the Mental Health Association of Southeastern Pennsylvania, a 501(c)(3) organization.
