Streamwood Hospital Opens New Children's Center to Meet Vital Community Need

42 beds added to serve the most clinically complex children

STREAMWOOD, Ill., June 1 /PRNewswire/ -- Streamwood Behavioral Health Systems today announced that its new 30,000-square-foot Children's Center addition has opened and begun admitting patients. The addition will increase the current inpatient bed count from 120 to 162 and better serve the needs of the community.

The vision for the Children's Center was established through dialogue with community partners like DCFS, DHS, schools, local law enforcement, social service agencies, parents and children. A comprehensive treatment environment has risen with the conception of the new facility called Healthy Opportunity in a Peaceful Environment or H.O.P.E.

Since 1991, Streamwood Behavioral Health Systems has served community needs by collaborating with facility leaders and employees as well as area residents to design programs that focus on prevention, intervention and sustainable aftercare for children and adolescents between the ages of 3 and 17 years old.

"Our goal is to find treatment solutions that work when traditional interventions have failed," said CEO Meyer. "In turn, our team of experts as well as the latest research allows us to provide advanced treatment options to children."

Streamwood Behavioral Health Systems not only knows the value of good clinical care, they also know the importance of healthcare education. That is why they serve as training ground for University of Illinois at Chicago (UIC) and Midwestern University.

Among the achievements in recent years, the hospital has demonstrated treatment success through its Advanced Child Treatment Program (ACT). The current bed expansion was initiated as a result of identified clinical needs of children in ACT.

A cohort of board certified child and adolescent psychiatrists has been gathered to serve as a Clinical Consulting Team. It includes Bennett Leventhal, MD; Virginia Susan Villani, MD and Robert Kowatch, MD. One of the cornerstones to the ACT program's success is the Response Training System (RTS) component, inspired by UIC's intensive treatment program. RTS extends the post discharge role of qualified professionals directly to the child's residence to help sustain the progress and insight gained during treatment.

Psychiatric Solutions, Inc., the parent company of Streamwood Behavioral Health Systems, provided $10 million in funding and support for the project. Over 100 positions will be created as a result of the expansion. A formal grand opening event is scheduled for June 23rd.

Streamwood Behavioral Health Systems is Illinois' first exclusive and largest free-standing center for children and adolescents. With nearly 100,000-square-feet and 162 licensed inpatient beds, the hospital provides services that include support groups, counseling, inpatient care, intensive outpatient programs and psychiatric evaluations.
