SALT LAKE CITY, June 3 /PRNewswire/ -- Smith's Food & Drug Stores donated $837,043.00 to Primary Children's Medical Center as a result of its annual grassroots fundraising efforts over the past several weeks.

Smith's associates throughout the 48 Utah and 4 Idaho stores have been hosting a variety of fundraising events like hot dog sales, sporting tournaments, dog washes and 5 K races to raise money for the children's hospital. Smith's customers, associates and suppliers have all made the gift possible.

Since 1992, Smith's associates have rallied to raise money for families served by the hospital. This year's contribution marks a total of $6.1 million contributed to Primary Children's Medical Center for the Charity Care Program that offers assistance to families who are unable to meet their medical obligations. Last year the hospital expended $13.3 million to cover 11,337 hospital visits by needy children.

"Smith's Food & Drug is the hospital's top corporate donor," says Joe Mott, Chief Executive Officer of Primary Children's Medical Center. "Smith's and its employees serve the community well beyond their stores by reaching out to children battling cancer, heart disease, the effects of prematurity and many other illnesses and injuries. Smith's has become a true friend to Primary Children's and we are deeply grateful for their many years of generous support."

Smith's support of PCMC goes back to the company's founder, Dee Smith, who in his youth would save his pennies and deliver them to the hospital. "We have a long-standing tradition of investing in Primary Children's Medical Center and we thank our 13,000 associates and customers for joining us in raising money for such an important cause," said Jim Hallsey, Smith's president.

Smith's is a division of the Kroger Co. (NYSE: KR), one of the nation's largest retail grocers. From its division office in Salt Lake City, Smith's 13,000 associates serve customers in 133 stores throughout 7 western states including Utah (48), Nevada (40), New Mexico (26), Wyoming (7), southeastern Idaho (4), Montana (4) and northern Arizona (4). Smith's charitable giving, in partnership with 13,000 associates, generous customers and suppliers, totaled $5.8 million in cash and food products to local organizations in 2008.
