San Antonio Clinic Will Run Tests on Generic, Brand-Name Drugs

Posted on: Wednesday, 13 July 2005, 00:00 CDT

Jul. 13--New generic drugs will be pitted against existing brand-name pharmaceuticals when CEDRA Clinical Research begins testing in its new San Antonio research hospital in late August. Recruitment of healthy patients for trials begins July 25.

The new CEDRA outpatient and inpatient drug-testing clinic in Northeast San Antonio expects eventually to have about 600 people a month in clinical trials.

The Austin-based firm will pay $3 million to $5 million a year in stipends to the volunteers, who also will get free health screenings that could uncover problems other than those treated by the test drugs, CEO David Garcia said.

CEDRA is hiring 100 medical researchers and clinicians and plans to be fully staffed by early 2006.

The first phase of clinical testing on a generic drug measures how it performs compared with more expensive brand-name drugs, and involves tests on between 20 and 100 healthy patients. The studies are done after the drug has been determined to be safe for human use, said the company's chief scientific officer, Sherilyn Adcock.

The company renovated 44,000 square feet of space on two floors of a building at 2455 Greenway Park outside Loop 410. Outpatient tests and other services will be done on the first floor, and the second floor will have dormitories, recreation rooms and dining facilities for people in long-term monitored testing.
