Fair Deployment of House Officers Urged
July 13, 2005
THIRTY years ago doctors (house officers) in the Kuala Lumpur General
Hospital had to go on call on alternate days due to an acute shortage of
doctors.
But even today house officers go on call on alternate days in HKL,
though in smaller hospitals they need to go on call one day a week only.
This shows that the house officers are not fairly distributed according
to patient strength in each hospital. This results in work overload for
house officers in some hospitals and insufficient exposure for house
officers in other hospitals.
To ensure that house officers get good training, the authorities should
be strict about the number of such officers posted in each hospital.
