Feeling Blue Suicide Prevention Council Partners With the National Institute of Mental Health

July 27, 2009

RADNOR, Pa., July 27 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ — Feeling Blue Suicide Prevention Council has been selected as the NIMH Outreach Partner for the state of Pennsylvania. Feeling Blue Suicide Prevention Council joins Outreach Partners in each state, Puerto Rico and the District of Columbia. In addition to the 55 state partners, there are over 80 National Partners, including professional, consumer, advocacy, and service-related organizations that represent groups primarily concerned with mental health, alcoholism, and drug abuse disorders. The Outreach Partnership Program is a national initiative that strives to increase public awareness about the important role of basic and clinical research in transforming the understanding and treatment of mental illnesses and addiction disorders, paving the way for prevention, recovery, and cure. The Program partners with national and state organizations to strengthen the public health impact of research by disseminating the latest scientific findings; informing the public about mental disorders, alcoholism, and drug addiction; and reducing the associated stigma and discrimination.

As a Partner of the Outreach Program, Feeling Blue Suicide Prevention Council will become part of an integrated network of state and national organizations. Each Outreach Partner conducts a statewide mental health outreach and education program to deliver science-based messages to the public, a broad range of health professionals, and historically underserved populations. The NIMH provides the Partners with breaking news on the latest scientific findings, numerous networking opportunities online and in regional annual meetings, access to NIMH publications for state-wide distribution and a small annual stipend.

Feeling Blue Suicide Prevention Council is a community-based organization dedicated to preventing suicide, reducing the stigma associated with suicide, and supporting those people affected by depression or the loss of a loved one to suicide. This is done through education and support. For more information, visit www.feelingblue.org.

Outreach Partners are chosen through a competition in which applications are reviewed by a panel of experts and NIMH staff. The Program is an initiative of the NIMH with support from the National Institute of Drug Abuse (NIDA) and in collaboration with the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMSHA).

The National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) is one of 27 components of the National Institutes of Health (NIH), the Federal government’s principal biomedical and behavioral research agency. NIH is part of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.
