Posted on: Wednesday, 5 August 2009, 08:42 CDT

CAMBRIDGE, Mass., Aug. 5 /PRNewswire/ -- Liza Solomon, Dr.P.H., a noted HIV/AIDS public policy leader and the former Director of the Maryland State AIDS Administration has joined Abt Associates as a principal associate in its Domestic Health Division. In addition to her public service, Dr. Solomon brings over three decades of additional public health experience in areas such as epidemiology, women's health, and head and extremity injury and trauma.

Dr. Solomon will be playing senior roles in developing, managing, and evaluating HIV/AIDS programs on behalf of such Abt Associates clients as the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), and the U.S. Health Resources and Service Administration. She will also be involved in projects that draw on her expertise in other healthcare specialties, as well as health policy management and health care reform.

"We are delighted that Liza Solomon has joined our team," said Dr. Scott W. Royal, division vice president for Domestic Health. "She brings a wealth of diverse experience and expertise -- clinical and research, public and private sector, policy and administrative -- with numerous potential applications to our core healthcare-practice areas."

Dr. Deborah Klein Walker, vice president and leader of the health division's public health practice area, added: "We are confident that Liza's broad capabilities and unique perspective will enable her to make valuable contributions to our practice and our business."

Dr. Solomon served for nine years as director of the AIDS Administration at the Maryland Department of Health and Mental Hygiene, where she had responsibility for managing statewide HIV activities including oversight of Maryland's HIV care and treatment programs, HIV surveillance initiatives, and responsibility for all CDC funded prevention activities in the state. Immediately prior to joining Abt Associates, Dr. Solomon was deputy director of the Alliance for Microbicide Development, an international non-profit organization dedicated to encouraging the development of female-controlled HIV and STI preventive agents. Previously, she was a member of the faculty at the Johns Hopkins School of Public Health where she managed large multisite epidemiologic studies of HIV infection in drug users and women. Earlier positions -- supervisor and physician assistant in several medical practices and clinics -- provided her with practical, ground-level healthcare services experience.

Dr. Solomon earned her Dr.P.H. and M.H.S. degrees from Johns Hopkins School of Hygiene and Public Health; a B.S. degree (Physician Assistant Program) from the State University of New York at Stony Brook; and a B.A. from the University of Illinois, Chicago Circle Campus. In addition, she was a Certified Surgical Assistant, and Certified Physician Assistant.

"I am looking forward to the opportunity of joining the Abt Associates healthcare team, and applying all facets of my professional experience to challenging projects in the HIV and other critical healthcare areas," Dr. Solomon said. "I have been a strong proponent of a systems approach -- integrating equitable healthcare services with sound healthcare policy and efficient program management -- and that approach should serve me well in my work at Abt Associates."
