AARP Takes the Fight to the Streets in Statewide Effort To Address Scare Tactics & Get the Facts out on Health Care Reform
CHICAGO, Aug. 5 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- As "swift boat" style groups are using myths, misinformation and scare tactics to derail health care reform while Congress is home for the summer, AARP volunteers in Illinois plan to meet them head on. Today, AARP Illinois announced it's "myth busting" efforts, aimed at debunking the myths, getting the public the facts on health care reform and reminding Congress to tackle the issue when they return to Washington, D.C. in September.
"We're not going to let the spin machines and special interests scare the masses when if comes to a critical issues like fixing our country's broken health care system," said Bob Gallo, AARP Illinois State Director. "The public needs to get the facts, not the hype and misinformation, on health care reform - this issue is too important to get lost in the shuffle of partisan political warfare."
As part of the statewide efforts taking place over the next month, AARP will be hosting events in the community, town halls and press conferences, aimed at getting the public the facts and "busting" the health care reform myths being spread. AARP will hold "Rx for health care reform" events in every Congressional district in Illinois, where volunteers will deliver thousands of Rx pill bottles filled with personal health care stories from constituents to their members of Congress, highlighting the need for reform.
"We are going to let Congress know that while they may be taking a break from Washington, they cannot take a vacation from the need to fix the health care system in this nation," added Gallo. "AARP is going to push to make sure any reform will improve the system and provide peace of mind to our 40 million members and their families."
The efforts are taking aim at debunking such myths as: health reform will hurt Medicare; it will allow the government to make life-and-death decisions for you; and reform is socialized medicine. AARP has set up a Web site (www.healthactionnow.org) where the public can get the facts and other up-to-date information on the health care reform debate.
