Aetna Sponsors Campaign to Raise Public Awareness of the Relationship Between Oral Health and Overall Health

Posted on: Wednesday, 13 July 2005, 15:01 CDT

Aetna (NYSE:AET) Dental today announced a sponsorship with Oral Health America (OHA) to raise public awareness about the relationship between good oral care and overall health.

Research increasingly suggests that good oral health contributes to healthier lifestyles and that certain chronic inflammatory diseases, such as periodontitis, increase the risk for other serious medical conditions. The multi-faceted campaign will seek to make consumers, dentists and their office staff, and policy makers aware of this connection.

Aetna's $50,000 grant establishes the company as a national sponsor in the initiative for 2005. Aetna Dental will participate with OHA in legislative planning and development strategy meetings to discuss the possibility of testifying in congressional briefings and hearings on periodontal diseases and their connection to overall health. In addition, Aetna Dental will co-sponsor activities to advance the health issues surrounding periodontal diseases, and will contribute to articles in OHA's publication, Oral Health Advocate.

"Aetna Dental and OHA share the mission of raising public awareness of oral health's relationship to overall health," said Pat Farrell, head of Aetna Dental. "We are committed to helping our dental members improve their oral health and, with this sponsorship, we can expand our efforts to include the dental health care community, legislators and consumers."

Oral Health America is the nation's only independent oral health advocacy organization. OHA was established in 1955 by members of the American Dental Association, American Dental Education Association and the American Dental Trade Association. Oral Health America is based in Chicago. Additional information can be found at www.oralhealthamerica.org.

As one of the nation's leading providers of health care, dental, pharmacy, group life, disability and long-term care benefits, Aetna puts information and helpful resources to work for its approximately 14.4 million medical members, 12.8 million dental members, 9.0 million pharmacy members and 14.0 million group insurance members to help them make better informed decisions about their health care and protect their finances against health-related risks. Aetna provides easy access to cost-effective health care through a nationwide network of more than 672,000 health care professionals, including approximately 400,000 primary care and specialist doctors and 4,084 hospitals.
