Deaconess Hospital in OKC Installs New Cancer Treatment System

Posted on: Wednesday, 13 July 2005, 21:00 CDT

Deaconess Hospital has installed the TomoTherapy HI-ART System, a cancer treatment system.

The system provides 3-D imaging before each treatment to verify the location of a patient's tumor. Radiation is then delivered via a beam in a helical pattern, from any point in a 360-degree radius around the patient. This enables more accurate and more precise treatment of the tumor and reduces exposure of healthy tissue to radiation and reduces treatment time, said John R. Taylor, radiation oncologist at Deaconess Hospital.

Traditional therapies can only project onto the tumor from a few different directions, he said. The TomoTherapy HI-ART System precisely pinpoints the tumor and delivers radiation from a 360- degree radius, reducing unnecessary exposure and minimizing side effects for our patients.

Deaconess has more than 1,400 employees and a medical staff of more than 650 physicians. The hospital has two campuses - 5501 N. Portland Ave. and Deaconess at Bethany, 7600 NW 23rd St.
