9th Annual Memory Ride for Alzheimer's Research

Posted on: Friday, 15 July 2005, 09:01 CDT

BOSTON, July 15 /PRNewswire/ -- On July 16, 150 cyclists will come together to participate in the 9th Annual Memory Ride for Alzheimer's Research, a two-day, 150-mile ride from Brattleboro, Vermont, to Boston. This year's Memory Ride has set a new participant record of 150 riders. The ride is well on its way to exceed last year's fundraising mark of $190,000, all of which supports Alzheimer's research.

Increasing evidence suggests that breakthroughs to risk reduction and preventing Alzheimer's may be within reach in the next decade, underscoring the need for continued funding and support of events like the Memory Ride. To date, the Memory Ride has raised over a half million dollars for Alzheimer's research.

"Each year, we award funds raised by the Memory Ride to researchers working to advance Alzheimer's research in search of effective treatments and eventually, a cure. This year's recipient of the Memory Ride Grant will be announced later in July," according to Jim Wessler, President of the Massachusetts chapter of the Alzheimer's Association.

The Memory Ride was founded by the Noonan family, whose members have been affected by Alzheimer's in three successive generations. Their experiences inspired them to create an event that would both raise awareness of the disease and raise funds to support Alzheimer's research. This year marks the first year that the Memory Ride has partnered with the Alzheimer's Association, Massachusetts chapter, one of the 25 year old association's oldest chapters.

"Working with the Alzheimer's Association has enabled us to promote awareness of Alzheimer's and the Memory Ride to an even greater extent than in previous years," says John Noonan, a member of the Noonan family and one of the ride's founders.

Day One -- Saturday, July 16, 85 Miles

The Memory Ride begins at the Holiday Inn in Brattleboro, Vt. at 7:30 a.m. on July 16. The challenging course will travel through Putney, Keane and Rindge, N.H. and provides breathtaking views of the region's most striking parks, peaks, and country roads. The first day's ride is 85 miles, ending in Fitchburg, Mass. The route is staffed with crew members to provide rider support. Riders stay overnight at Fitchburg High School, where they can share stories of their personal experiences with Alzheimer's.

Day Two -- Sunday, July 17, 65 Miles to Closing Ceremonies

On July 17, the riders continue their journey across New England through Groton, Carlisle and Belmont, Mass. The ride's closing ceremonies begin at 3:00 p.m. with a victory ride into Artesani Park in Brighton, Mass. Channel 56's Stephanie Leydon will emcee the ceremony, which will feature speakers Jim Wessler, President of the Massachusetts chapter of the Alzheimer's Association, and a researcher who is involved with cutting edge Alzheimer's projects.
