NetWellness Unveils Expanded African American Health Site at Congressional Black Caucus Health Braintrust Public Forum on Health Disparities at Case

Posted on: Saturday, 16 July 2005, 09:00 CDT

CLEVELAND, July 16 /PRNewswire/ -- In honor of the Congressional Black Caucus Health Braintrust "Public Forum on Health Disparities" being held today at Case Western Reserve University (Case), NetWellness, a highly regarded consumer health website, unveils its expanded online health center focusing on African American health (http://netwellness.org/healthtopics/aahealth). The center features original articles written by experts in the field, an Ask an Expert section on health topics relevant to African Americans, and links to high-quality websites. Provided by University of Cincinnati (UC), Ohio State University and Case, NetWellness is pleased to support the Braintrust event with science-based, unbiased content for consumers.

NetWellness and UC expert Kenneth Davis, Jr., M.D., notes, "NetWellness represents a collaborative effort by three major university medical centers to provide accurate, relevant, and objective health information to the public in a user-friendly format. The African American health center specifically addresses major health problems in our community."

U.S. Rep. Stephanie Tubbs Jones (D-11th OH) is convinced that, "To impact health disparities, it is vital that all of us -- lawmakers, grass-roots organizations, health systems and universities -- work together. It is wonderful to see Ohio's research universities taking a leadership role to provide the best information for all our nation's citizens."

With NetWellness receiving 2.5 million hits monthly, NetWellness and Case expert Robert Haynie, M.D., Ph.D., believes that "providing consumer-focused content on African American health can improve outcomes for individuals everywhere, regardless of age, gender, education or income level." Through computers and internet service at most public libraries, NetWellness reaches communities throughout the United States, including the traditionally underserved.

Celebrating its 10th anniversary, NetWellness was one of the first consumer health websites, and remains commercial-free. Susan Wentz, M.D., director of NetWellness at Case and a participating panelist on health information technology at the public forum, observes, "With all the health information available today, it is vital that it's accessible to the public and presented in a way that people can use in their lives."

For the past four years, funding has been secured in the federal budget through the leadership of U.S. Rep. Ralph Regula (R-16th OH), U.S. Rep. Dave Hobson (R-7th OH) and Sen. George V. Voinovich (R-OH).
