CHCM credential holders come from various backgrounds including manufacturing, system safety, transportation, government, education, insurance, and mining. CHCM Diplomates manage or lead the following types of hazard control programs: safety and health, environmental management, system engineering, industrial hygiene, fire safety, product safety, hazardous material management, and other related disciplines. CHSP Diplomates come from varied healthcare backgrounds and work in areas such as environmental safety, security, occupational health, nursing, administration, risk management, quality improvement, facility management, biomedical engineering, hazardous material management, emergency management, fire safety, and environmental services. The CHSP program has gained wide recognition and continues to attract healthcare professionals desiring to earn their certification in healthcare safety. The CHEP, CPSM, and CPSO programs offer candidates an opportunity to earn a credential directly related to their profession.
Candidates for certification must document relevant job experience and/or appropriate education. Applicants must complete a formal application, provide a current job description, and obtain two reference evaluations from persons aware of their qualifications. Application and Reference Evaluation Forms can be printed from the Board website. Credentials for the CHCM and CHSP programs are issued at the Associate, Senior, and Master Levels depending on experience and/or education. Each candidate must achieve a passing score on a rigorous credentialing exam that contains 100 to 130 multiple choice test items. No exams test engineering or math-solving competencies. Candidates not holding a four-year degree may qualify for all programs with documented job-related experience.
