ROCKVILLE, Md., Oct. 22 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ --The AHRQ National Advisory Council's Subcommittee on Patient Safety and Medical Liability Reform will meet to provide advice for its deliberations regarding the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services' new medical liability initiative. The Subcommittee will discuss selected examples of innovation that address medical liability and patient safety. Subcommittee members will advise the National Advisory Council about specific promising approaches that applicants might consider, as well as additional evaluation criteria. This meeting is open to the public, and attendees will have an opportunity to provide comment.
The medical liability initiative, led by AHRQ, will test models that put patient safety first and work to reduce preventable injuries; foster better communication between doctors and their patients; ensure that patients are compensated in a fair and timely manner for medical injuries, while also reducing the incidence of frivolous lawsuits; and reduce liability premiums. Support for a rapid and comprehensive review of current system improvement efforts targeting both patient safety and medical liability, planning grants to states and health systems, and demonstration grants to states and health systems will be included as part of this effort.
The total funding available for the planning and demonstration grants is $25 million. The funding opportunity announcement is available at http://www.ahrq.gov/fund/grantix.htm.
