Congressman Wants E. Coli Investigation In Schools

One US legislator has proposed an investigation into whether or not a recent E. coli outbreak has reached food supplies for school lunches.
Congressman George Miller, D-Calif., hopes the investigation will ensure the safety of school lunch programs after an E. coli bacteria outbreak was reported among ground beef.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention announced last week that the outbreak has killed at least two people in the US and sickened more than 20 others.
Fairbank Farms of Ashville, New York, has recalled 545,699 lbs of ground beef, as it was believed to be the source of the bacteria outbreak.
So far, no schools have reported any complications related to the E. coli outbreak.
However, Miller has asked the Government Accountability Office to investigate whether or not there are proper safeguards in place at school food programs.
According to the Associated Press, the GAO in September reported that federal authorities did not warn schools about a previous peanut recall.
The GAO also noted that the Agriculture Department was sometimes sluggish in making sure that schools were aware of recalled food items.
