Don’t Let Your Fruit Intake Be Left Out in the Cold This Winter
FISHERS, Ind., Dec. 8 /PRNewswire/ — As the winter months hit the Northern Hemisphere, many Americans’ diets tend to go into hibernation. Local produce becomes non-existent, and fresh, in-season fruit is harder to come by.
Trouble is, our nutritional needs don’t change. According to the USDA’s MyPyramid guidelines, adults need three to four servings of fruit per day, year round. Add in the temptations so prevalent during the end-of-year holidays–cookies, pastries, and high-calorie beverages quickly come to mind–and it’s easy to see how healthy eating can suddenly head south for the winter.
To keep your fruit intake up, increase your consumption of bananas, apples and citrus fruits, all of which can still be reasonably priced during the winter. Raisins and dried plums are also a good choice, as is canned fruit (make sure there’s no added sugar.)
Over the past 20 years or so, imported fruits have come to American supermarkets during our winter months. Growing seasons in South and Central America make up for the Northern Hemisphere’s seasonality, making berries, grapes, peaches, nectarines, lemons, limes and other favorites available anytime. The high cost of imported fruit compared to summertime equivalents, though, can strain tight family budgets, so watch for specials.
Another new alternative is freeze-dried fruit. In the past, freeze-drying usually produced chalky, powdery products with little flavor. Funky Monkey Snacks, however, has revolutionized freeze-drying with a totally new and proprietary technique. The result is 100% real fruit with a crisp, crunchy texture that both children and adults love.
“Many processed products are based on fruit. But most contain added sugars, colors, flavors and preservatives,” said Matt Herzog, president of Funky Monkey Snacks. “What’s more, dried fruit preserves less than half the nutrients of fresh fruit. Our ‘fruit that crunches’ tastes great and has none of the junk, while maintaining nutritional values equal to their fresh fruit counterparts. And each bag contains three servings of fruit–nearly the entire daily recommended amount.”
Herzog noted that Funky Monkey Snacks are convenient take-alongs for go-anywhere snacking, including outdoor winter activities like sledding, skiing and skating.
Funky Monkey Snacks are available at Target, Whole Foods Market and other grocery stores, as well as online at Amazon.com. For a full list of retailers, visit www.FunkyMonkeySnacks.com.
