Call for End of Year Donations to the US Oncology Foundation

December 8, 2009

THE WOODLANDS, Texas, Dec. 8 /PRNewswire/ — The US Oncology Foundation is asking for year-end donations to help cancer patients with financial assistance to keep roofs over their heads and food on the table for their families.

The US Oncology Foundation, soon to be named the Life Beyond Cancer Foundation, is dedicated to providing cancer patients and their families with financial assistance for everyday living expenses including mortgages and rent, utility bills, car payments, gas, food for the family and other necessities. To make a donation, or for more information on the US Oncology Foundation, visit the organization’s Web site at: www.usoncologyfoundation.org.

“Cancer treatments are costly. Even patients who have full health insurance coverage may need financial assistance just to meet their everyday needs,” says Ann Wolford, executive director of the Foundation. “Our Foundation addresses that need and helps keep patients and their families in their homes, keeps utilities on, and prevents cars from being repossessed. We receive dozens of requests for assistance each month. The more funds we raise, the more people we can help and the bigger impact we can have on people’s lives.”

Donations to the US Oncology Foundation fulfill an unmet need in communities throughout the United States by providing this type of financial assistance to patients and their families. The foundation also funds cancer prevention and early detection awareness programs in conjunction with other community organizations and supports a women’s retreat each year called Life Beyond Cancer.

The Life Beyond Cancer retreat provides cancer survivors, oncology nurses and social workers an opportunity to rejuvenate their bodies as they rekindle their spirits and learn to become advocates for cancer patients. The advocacy aspect of the retreat empowers attendees to bring inspiring and necessary new programs back to their communities when they return from the retreat.

The Life Beyond Cancer retreat is celebrating its 10th anniversary with the next retreat scheduled for Dec. 10 – 13 at Miraval in Catalina, Ariz. Two retreats are scheduled for 2010 and each retreat hosts more than 125 people. Cancer survivors, oncology nurses and oncology social workers interested in attending next year can find out more information by visiting the Foundation website at www.usoncologyfoundation.org.

Lloyd Everson, M.D., chairman of the board for the Foundation and vice chairman of US Oncology, Inc., said, “The goal of this foundation is to provide education and support for cancer survivors and to promote prevention programs in underserved communities. As we know, cancer can be financially devastating; the foundation also offers assistance for utilities, transportation, mortgage payments, and other day-to-day costs to help alleviate stress for the patient and their families.”
