Data You Shouldn't Brush Off: Studies Show Gum Disease May Pose Risk To Overall Health

NEW YORK, July 20 /PRNewswire/ -- Recent studies suggest that gum disease may be not only limited to your mouth -- it may pose a risk to your overall health. Gum diseases like gingivitis may put you at a higher risk for certain diseases. In fact, some studies have shown an association between gingivitis and heart disease.
Oscar-winner Halle Berry, a healthy-lifestyle advocate and practitioner, was in New York City recently to launch the new Oral-B Pulsar, the first toothbrush with a pulse. To celebrate the launch, Halle Berry also presented a $150,000 donation from Oral-B in support of healthy lifestyles and overall health.
Despite Americans' love affair with the fitness and health craze, millions continue to ignore their oral health. According to the National Institutes of Health, an estimated 80 percent of American adults have some form of gum disease.
While more research needs to be done on the link between oral health and heart disease, in the meantime, it's important to maintain a healthy oral care regimen, including brushing, flossing and routine dental visits. Awareness and adherence to this simple formula can help to ensure that your whole mouth -- and your body -- is healthy.
