New York City Surgeon Develops All-Natural Treatment for Wrinkles and Scars

February 1, 2010

NEW YORK, Feb. 1 /PRNewswire/ — Patients now have a simple and all-natural way to improve wrinkles, laugh lines and even difficult-to-treat acne scars. Pioneered by Anthony P. Sclafani, MD, FACS, Director of Facial Plastic Surgery at The New York Eye & Ear Infirmary and Professor at New York Medical College, this new therapy harnesses the body’s natural healing ability to improve skin appearance while avoiding the use of synthetic implants, fillers and gels.

In a study to be published in the Journal of Cosmetic Dermatology, Dr. Sclafani reported that patients treated with an extract of their own blood, platelet rich fibrin matrix (PRFM), demonstrated significant improvement in the appearance of their laugh lines within 2 weeks of treatment. Results from the clinical study showed that the effects are stable over a 3 month period. Additional studies examining the mechanism of action are to be reported soon.

PRFM is prepared from a small amount of the patient’s blood obtained in the physician’s office using a patented FDA-cleared system, Selphyl®, marketed by Aesthetic Factors, Inc. (Wayne, NJ, www.selphyl.com). The same technology has been used in enhancing the healing of orthopedic and spine injuries, in oral surgery and as treatment for non- healing wounds.

According to Dr. Sclafani, who has been using PRFM for over 2 years, ” Selphyl® technology allows for the isolation of a patient’s own factors which the body naturally uses promote healing. This technique of autologous tissue regeneration (ATR) allows me to promote reorganization and repair of treated tissues in a natural way without the use of any foreign substance. Results appear to be stable for at least 2 years.” Dr. Sclafani also uses this system in other cosmetic procedures, such as rhinoplasty, facelift, fat transfer and facial implant surgery to enhance and speed healing after surgery. “The most essential feature of this treatment is that is it uses only the patient’s natural healing mechanisms which are applied in a focused and directed way. Wrinkles, folds and scars can be improved, and healing after surgery can be accelerated. Since only the patient’s natural tissues are used, there is no risk of rejection.”

Dr. Sclafani has lectured nationally and internationally and has been received the Sir Harold Delf Gillies and Ira Tresley (twice) awards for excellence in research. He is double board certified, including by the American Board of Facial Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery, and is a Past President of the New York Facial Plastic Surgery Society. He has offices in Manhattan and in Chappaqua, NY.
