Nuchia Foods Corporation President Homer Hartage to Speak at Drexel University on the Advent of Nuchia Foods’ Chia Seed Flour: A Gluten-Free Alternative Flour That May Also Fight Disease

April 6, 2010

ORLANDO, Fla., April 6 /PRNewswire/ — Homer L. Hartage, President of Nuchia Foods Corporation, will speak at Drexel University’s Goodwin College on April 7th, 2010. Hartage will address students studying hospitality and food science. Faculty and community leaders interested in the development of gluten-free alternative flour will also attend the lecture. Hartage was invited to speak after Dr. Handel, PhD, discovered the company products.

Hartage said, “This is an opportunity to get the latest developments in gluten-free foods and ingredients to a new generation of industry leaders.” He added, “The use of Chia Seed Flour and related products in baking and as natural food ingredients represents a market with virtually untapped commercial potential.” Gluten is a protein found in wheat, rye and barley that can cause illness or death in people that are allergic to gluten.

Nuchia Foods Corporation developed Chia Seed Flour in 2007. It is an all-purpose baking flour made from the raw whole grain of an ancient grain called Chia Seed (salvia Hispanica L). It is available in health food stores and is making its way into the commercial markets through bakeries and food ingredient companies.

The Chia seed grain has been used as a food source since the days of the Mayan and first cultivated as a cash crop by the Aztecs 500 years ago. Both the Mayans and Aztecs used Chia as medicine and food. Nuchia Foods is once again making Chia Seed Flour available to nutrition-conscious consumers.

Emerging research is proving that the Chia Seed is the most nutritionally dense grain yet discovered. A 24-gram serving contains more omega-3 than three pounds of salmon and has as much calcium as 3 glasses of milk. It is accepted that increases in amounts of omega-3 in diets reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease and increases in calcium support healthy bone growth. Chia seed flour is the most stable botanical source of omega-3.

Surprisingly Chia has virtually no smell, a neutral taste and has a lower caloric count than oatmeal, whey protein powder or defatted soy flour. Talk about a nutritional arsenal – Chia contains twelve essential minerals and much more. Even small amounts of Chia Flour added to foods like bread, snacks, soups, and cereals will boost nutritional values.

Foods developed from Chia Seed flour may address the three main causes of diseases today: obesity, diabetes and cardiovascular disease. Chia slows digestion and helps maintain healthy blood sugar levels, which is helpful in the prevention or control of diabetes. For healthy diet plans Chia has natural satiety properties which tend to create a sense of fullness, warding off intense feelings of hunger. It is an excellent source of fiber. Each serving contains 30% of the daily recommended intake of fiber. High-fiber diets have also been shown to promote healthy weight loss and improve gastrointestinal functions.
